What is the state of the wiring in your home? Like many things, this is not something that you might be able to readily ascertain, since most of your wiring is inside your walls. It is possible that most of what you can easily access has been replaced and modernized, while old, unsafe wiring is lying beneath.
If this is the case, you might not have any problems at all, but when adding another significant load, such as a large appliance, the circuits could be overloaded.
If there is aluminum wiring in your home, there is a higher risk of fire. Many times you can identify aluminum wiring by the abbreviation CA/ALR stamped on it. Since this is an older, obsolete standard, you want to find an electrician that has experience with aluminum wiring whenever you need to make modifications.
If you have a house that was built before the 1930s, you might find knob and tube wiring. This type of wiring is even more complicated to modify, and many times, modifications are done incorrectly, causing a fire hazard.
