The coziness of candles can be deceptive. It’s true that candles are a wonderful way to make a home feel cozy, especially during colder, darker months. But even though the flame is small, it can still be deadly. So when using candles, take some precautions.

It has been recommended to trim the wick of a candle down to ¼” before using it for the first time. This will prevent the flame from getting too big. Place your candle on a solid surface, unable to be knocked over by kids or pets. Do not place it near anything flammable, such as curtains or blankets.

A huge safety tip is to never fall asleep with candles burning and never leave a candle burning when you leave home. Candles shouldn’t even be left burning in a room you are not in. Fires can start so quickly and get out of control. If you use a match to light the candle, dispose of that safely as well. You can either run it under water or let it cool off on a heat-resistant surface. Never throw a hot match into the trash can where it might ignite other materials.
