Perhaps you have a dog currently or are thinking of getting one in the near future that you would like to allow to run off leash on your property. How can you keep it safe? Fencing is a great idea. But what kind should you get?

Many people opt for underground electric fences. These are desired because they are aesthetically pleasing. Also, they can do a decent job of keeping your dog on your property if it is well-trained. But keep in mind that these are not foolproof. Dogs can run past the fence line. Sometimes they will run after what they want, even if it means getting shocked. Also, these underground fences do not keep other dogs off your property, so that can pose a risk to your dog. And if there is an electrical outage or the batteries in your dog’s collar die, the fence line might be compromised.

Physical fences can be a great option, and there is a variety to choose from. Some are made from wood, metal, or vinyl. They will keep your dog on your property and keep others off. Just be sure it is high enough so your dog can’t jump over, and make sure it locks properly.
